I heard at third hand that Garrison Keelor had referred to Norm Coleman as “ a false knight upon the road”. What would a true knight’s life be like at the end? I had read a whole lot of Mallory when I was thirteen and it was all still down there. The song just poured itself out.

Lyrics:
I have grown old along the road
armor tarnished and my saddle worn
true knight they named me when I took my vows
and since been sorely tried

I have grown old along the road
many lances broken body battle-scarred
and all the men I loved are gone
and all the women who loved me

I have grown old along the road
spent myself unstinting in the service of my king
Would he’d ever sent me to endeavor for the right
that he and I were both beyond all stain

I have grown old along the road.
The grail a wonder cup for one who wasn’t me
never pure enough to find and drink
oh, but pure enough to seek

I have grown old along the road
and now contend within myself and not with other men.
A temper held in check, a kindness kept
these small victories are my own

I have grown old along the road,
armor tarnished and my saddle worn.
True knight they named me when I took my vows
and since been sorely tried
